HELLO, I’M LAO MA—OLD HORSE

I am a novelist and author whose writing has been shaped by many years spent traveling, living, and working throughout Asia.

My books explore the cultures, traditions, and philosophies of China and Japan. Some are stories of family, folklore, loss, and the unseen forces that connect generations. Others offer quiet reflections on purpose, resilience, mindfulness, and living with intention.

From the mist-covered Hakka villages of rural Fujian to the lantern-lit teahouses of 1930s Tokyo, I write about people finding courage, meaning, and belonging in a changing world.

My Approach

MY WRITING

STORIES ROOTED IN CULTURE

My books explore the traditions, beliefs, and quiet wisdom found within Chinese and Japanese culture. Through memorable characters and richly imagined settings, I invite readers into worlds shaped by nature, history, and the unseen forces that connect generations.

WHERE STORY MEETS WISDOM

From the mist-covered mountains of rural China to the timeless traditions of the geisha, each book offers a different journey. Some tell stories of courage, loss, and ancient guardians; others explore grace, purpose, presence, and the lessons that can guide modern life.

Winter Honey

A literary novel set in rural Fujian, where Hakka tradition and the spirit world quietly intertwine. Some things are not gone. Only waiting.
